Description

Every year, as the early sprinkles of snow falls over the town of Fernie, locals partake in a sacrificial event in the woods. At the annual Mogul Smoker, wooden skis are burned as an offering to Griz for a winter season full of powder! As the fire burns, the music starts and the people dances as their passion for powder reaches the ears of Griz.

For those that do not know, Griz is a large man known to reside in Fernie’s mountain tops. He is dressed in a grizzly cloak, carrying a musket. According to locals, when he is happy, he shoots his musket towards the sky and in turn creating huge amounts of snowfall over the mountains around Fernie.

In 1976, locals started an event called the Mogul Smoker when they burned wooden skis as an offering to Griz. They noticed that during years that they did not run this event, the snowfall decreased. So, since then, the Mogul Smoker runs every year without fail. Have to keep Griz happy!
